Audiometric Testing
An audiometric test is much more than just a common hearing test for workers.
The audiogram produced during the test provides the employer with insights into the hearing ability of a worker (status quo) and it shows deviations from the norm.
Therefore, when done periodically, the Audiometric test will help to identify trends and it will help identify potential OH&S risks.
Article
Did you know that hearing loss is one of the most common work-related illnesses in the Australia?
In this article, we will discuss how audiometric assessments help businesses reduce risk and improve productivity.
Hearing Test
Audiometric testing is generally required for workers receiving a noise dose similar to that of an idling heavy truck at a distance of 1 metre during an 8 hour day, or a worker exposed to noise similar to that of a mid to high calibre rifle at the workers ear, for short periods.
An audiometric audit must be conducted in a controllable test environment (e.g. a testing booth or soundproof office) to minimise external influences on the test result (audiogram).
FitTick provides onsite and inhouse audiometric testing using either our purpose-built mobile testing booth, dedicated testing spaces in our local offices, or pop-up testing facilities which can be set up Australia-wide within 24 hours.
Our mobile ‘booth’, which is built on a heavy duty trailer trailer features a noise cancelling cabin and has full calibration and certification for testing on site and in remote areas.

Why Audiometric testing?
Australian Standards
Audiometric testing needs to be done within 3 months of an employee starting a position that requires wearing PPE, or if no changes occur, at least every 2 years.
Pre-Employment Checks
FitTick can provide your business with valuable OH&S insights of your workforce by continiously screening your workforce and providing ongoing and reliable reports.
Duty of Care
Frequent audiometric assessments ensures that changes in hearing abillity is discovered early so businesses can add counter measures (e.g. PPE) can be put in place.
Hearing Test Procedure
Participants details are entered into the audiometric testing computer.
Participants are asked a series of questions to determine their recent exposure to noise.
Participants then enter the audiometric booth to undergo an audiometric test. The booth is noise dampened from external noise which can feel “a bit weird” for a few seconds.
Test will be conducted. The participant will be ask to put on special earphones and to listen to different frequencies/sounds transmitted through their earphones. Participants then are asked to press a button once they heard a sound.
Once test is complete a report is printed, and the results are discussed.
FitTick Audiometric Testing can be carried out mobile on-site, in-house in one of our offices or at a pop-up testing locations through-out Australia.
Our team of technicians use state-of-the-art equipment and a simple, standardised process to reduce the time per test to a minimum (approx. 15min p.p.) and to assure that all test are done under similar conditions.
Pop-Up
We offer pop-up testing at your workplace or anywhere Australia-wide at a suitable location.
Mobile Booth
Our purpose-built and calibrated testing booth is available throughout South Australia.
Testing location requirements
Pop-Up (onsite)
Please provide a lockable room or office in a quiet area of your worksite. Offices close to the source of noise will influence the test results.
Pop-Up (offsite)
We will set-up a testing facility as close as possible to your worksite or as easy to access for your workforce (e.g. CBD) as possible. Please make sure that your employees are instructed that the test will be conducted offsite.
Mobile Testing Booth
Please assign us an appropriate parking area. Even though testing is conducted in a noise cancelling cabin, results can vary greatly if the surrounding noise level is too high (e.g. when parked next to large machinery).
How to prepare for your
Audiometric Hearing Test
Employees to have audiometric tests are asked to have at least 16 hours quiet time prior to their hearing test. This basically means that the employee is not exposed to more than 80dB(A) immediately preceding the test (approximately equal to the noise of a vacuum cleaner).
Please let the FitTick Technician know of any hearing impairment known to you.
Fit testing Results
Our testing device (Audiometer) produces an electronic file of the test and it’s result. A print-out will be handed out or electronically sent to the employer.
A copy of the file will be stored at our premises for the employer to request copies of the results in the future.
