What is Respiratory Protective Equipment (RPE) Fit Testing?

FitTick’s Respirator Fit Testing ensures the right mask, the right fit, and the right protection for every worker. Respirator Fit Testing checks that a mask (disposable or reusable) forms an adequate seal against the wearer’s face, protecting them from airborne contaminants such as dust, chemicals, silica, asbestos, or infectious particles.

We test all styles, brands, and models of masks across industries including:

  • Healthcare
  • Automotive
  • Mining & Quarrying
  • Manufacturing
  • Construction
  • Pharmaceuticals
  • Masonry

Why is Respirator Fit Testing Important?

Duty of Care

Ensure every employee has the correct PPE fit for their role, even when combined with other equipment like safety glasses, earmuffs, or helmets.

Risk Management

Identify risks early - such as incorrect mask use, poor maintenance, or facial hair interference - and prevent safety breaches before they happen.

Ongoing Compliance

Meet Australian Standard AS/NZS 1715:2009, which recommends respirator fit testing at pre-employment, onboarding, or at least annually, or when physical or equipment changes occur.

Respirator Fit Testing Procedure

FitTick’s expert process ensures fast, accurate, and consistent testing with minimal workplace disruption.

Step 1: Health & Safety Survey
  • A brief pre-test health check assesses any conditions that may affect fit.

Step 2: Test Explanation
  • Clear instructions are provided to ensure employee comfort and understanding.

Step 3: Fit Testing Process (7 Stages)
  • Each participant completes a 7-step test simulating typical workplace tasks (breathing, movement, talking, bending).

Step 4: Results & Reporting
  • Results are discussed immediately. Employers receive digital records the same day. FitTick Cards are issued within a week.

Flexible Respirator Fit Testing Options Australia-Wide

In-house

We offer In-house testing at our office in Adelaide, South Australia.

Mobile Testing Booth

Please provide a suitable parking area for our mobile testing booth. While the testing environment is controlled, high dust levels such as from nearby manufacturing plants can impact test accuracy.

Mobile Pop-Up

Onsite

For onsite testing, we require a lockable room or office (approx. 20sqm) in a quiet, clean area with at least two power points, a table, and two chairs. Avoid offices near dust or airborne contaminants, as they can affect test results.

Offsite

We’ll set up a testing facility close to your worksite or in a convenient location for your workforce (e.g. CBD). Please ensure employees are informed that the test will be conducted offsite.
