Spirometry Testing

A spirometry test, in combination with other tests such as fit tests or audiometric tests, can be used to ensure that the health of a worker is not affected by their workplace and that provided PPE is working properly. We recommend an audit as part of pre-employment or onboarding checks and then periodically (for example annually).

FitTick helps companies operating in areas such as  stonemasonry, pharmaceuticals, manufacturing or mining, to become and stay compliant with Australian standards and industry regulations.

Spirometry testing is recommended and regulated under the Work Health and Safety Regulations 2012 (SA).

Lung function Test

A spirometry test is a lung function test that shows how well a person is breathing. Also called pulmonary function testing (PFT), it is a common respiratory performance evaluation used to determine or monitor the lung function of workers in certain areas or industries. It is a simple test that measures the volume and speed of air while breathing.

Whether your organisation is large or small, employers and safety professionals must protect employees from potential risks they might be exposed in the workplace. In higher-risk industries such as mining, pharmaceuticals, healthcare and manufacturing, it is vital for employers to monitor the potential impact of day-to-day exposure to hazards such as dust and airborne chemicals.

Work Health and Safety Regulations 2012 (SA)

FitTick helps companies in various industries and the Government to become compliant with current legislation such as the Work Health and Safety Regulations 2012.

Chapter 7, Division 6, Number 368

Legislation was last updated in 2014 and now states that “the person conducting a business or undertaking must ensure that health monitoring is provided to a worker carrying out work for the business or undertaking if the worker is carrying out ongoing work at a workplace using, handling, generating or storing” hazardous material.

Why Spirometry testing?

Risk Management

Spirometry testing should be conducted as part of your risk management profile , where employees may be exposed to increased levels of dust or other airborne hazards.

Workplace safety

Frequent testing will highlight any changes in single or groups of employees with changes in the lung capacity giving companies the ability to to make changes to avoid costly loss of productivity whilst caring for their employees.

Australian Standard

Testing should occur at least every 12 months so any change in lung capacity is recorded. Safework SA recommends "lung function tests" to be part of the ongoing health monitoring process of workers exposed "to certain substances as part of your work".

Spirometry Test Procedure

The participants details are entered into the spirometry equipment.

Participants are asked a series of questions to determine if there are any medical conditions that may affect their testing.

The participant is then instructed on how to take the spirometry test.

The test is conducted. The participant is asked to breath through a Spirometer multiple times and with different intensity e.g.

  • Normal breathing
  • Exhaling fast
  • Exhaling slow/long

Once the test is complete the FitTick technician will review and discuss the results with the participant and will answer any questions
